Where was he? Where was that hunka-hunka bull Ferdinand?
Blossom paced restlessly back and forth near the boundary fence. Every few seconds she blew out a frustrated sigh and looked across the fence toward the
Had she gotten the time wrong? The day wrong? Oh, where was he?
A breeze drifted by, carrying a hint of coolness, a touch of humidity. Her thick skin felt clammy, but she knew her reaction had more to do with anticipation than the weather. She was as nervous as a young cow facing her first time with a bull. Who wouldn’t be excited if they were in her place? Before long all her fantasies would be fulfilled by the bull of her dreams.
Her double stomach fluttered again. No doubt about it, this was the real thing: authentic, happily-ever-after love. She’d dreamed of him for months, even started flirting with him across the fence lately. Elsie, no longer interested in him, had nearly laughed her fool Jersey head off when Blossom had let slip how besotted she was with the
She glanced toward the farm, toward the dairy barn off in the distance, where the rest of her herd was snuggly settled in for the night. It had taken some stealth to sneak back out. Nosing open the nearly closed barn door had been a challenge in itself. She was good at stealth. When she had a mind to do it, she was highly skilled at tip-hoofing away on adventures. Especially when there was a chance for some excitement in her life. An opportunity to slip away from the boring, too peaceful existence Elsie and the others led.
The ground rumbled, capturing her attention.
Her heart raced. Those heavy hoofbeats could only belong to that one-ton prime bull she adored. She trembled in readiness. She could hardly stand still, until she realized where she was…too close to the fence.
She scampered a dozen feet away, quickly bending her head down for a mouthful of grass. Of course, she’d agreed to this tryst, wanted it more than anything. Yet she had to show some small measure of resistance to his powerful allure. She didn’t want him to know that it took enormous willpower on her part not to attempt to jump the fence and race straight to him. He’d get an even bigger head than he had if he knew how desperately she wanted him.
The wind carried his scent to her and she shivered in response. She didn’t have to look up to see how much he wanted her. His desire seemed to sizzle through the air. He wanted her. Her. Blossom. It still amazed her that the king stud in these parts had paid so much attention to her lately, had whispered promises of showing off his special skills with her, had hinted that she would be his special cow.
Heat spread through her. Oh my, but she wanted him to show her those special skills.
Out of the corner of her eye she saw Ferdinand raise his mighty head. Then, as if he knew she was watching him, he struck a pose that revealed to her exactly how he felt at the moment. When she noted the size of . . .
Oh my!
Her legs threatened to collapse. She felt weak all over. Oh my, oh my, oh my.
He stood silently waiting. She pretended another moment’s resistance, and then decided to hell with it.
Her hooves barely touched the ground as she raced toward him. Anticipation of the wonders ahead had her feeling young, agile, and oh so eager. This would be a night to remember, of that she was sure.
Only a mere fence kept the lovers apart, but Blossom knew nothing would stop Ferdinand now. Not when he looked so determined. Not when he sensed that she was as ready as he obviously was. The instant she was close enough to make his nostrils flare from inhaling her scent, he shifted his massive body against the nearest fence post.
The post broke as if it were a mere twig.
Their gazes met. Such promises sparked in the depth of his large brown eyes.
Blossom’s heart pounded.
He gave a tiny nod, inviting—not demanding—that she come to him.
Elsie would say to refuse. But then Elsie wouldn’t have snuck away for such a tryst. Elsie was a damn old fool.
Blossom smiled, hoping the smile was somewhat seductive. And then she all but skipped her way to him. Oh yes, there would definitely be some memories made tonight!
